Many CVs are rejected before they are fully read because they contain basic mistakes, poor presentation, and irrelevant information. Recruitment companies report that even highly qualified candidates are often "turned down" due to poorly written CVs. The Marketing Director of one recruitment agency stated that the best candidates are the most affected — their skills are invisible behind a badly formatted document.
Employers are very busy people. They spend only 15–30 seconds reading a CV. For this reason, presentation format is critical. A CV should never include information that is not directly relevant to the position. It is a marketing tool designed to demonstrate your skills, achievements, and suitability for a specific job — not a general autobiography.
A successful CV must show your overall qualifications, highlight your professional successes, and match the job specification. Candidates who tailor their CV to each position are far more likely to be invited for an interview.
